A Letter to a President
Dear Mr President,
I must start by saying that I am a fan of yours, not of your
policies though but I love to listen to you and your lovely wife whenever you
speak. Very eloquent speakers you are! You two speak with so much conviction
and have a way of gluing both supporters and opponents alike to their seats to listen.
However, I am becoming troubled by the constant what I’d
call “presidential marketing” such as the dinners with regular families, the
perfect family image, contributing to the going-ons in the world of celebrities,
appearing in reality shows and all that. Yes, we get it; you are as human as
the person who lives downtown. I have
never seen any president do so much “presidential marketing” or a president
that can become whatever he wants to be when he needs to be or even one that
can talk the talk and probably walk the walk.
I have often asked my friends of your ethnicity why they
voted for you and they all shock me by not knowing why. Maybe, it’s the skin colour. Then I ask my
friends of other ethnicities why they voted for you and still the same thing.
Then, why the hell did they vote for you!!!!
In this day and age, the people who practice religion are sadly
looked at as the weird ones. I happen to practice religion and take it
seriously. Times and times again, I have been told that it’s ok (so I’m not
weird) by my non-religious friends for me to believe in God because of my
ethnicity. Therefore, my president, I must
commend you for staying religious although I am quite confused as to what exact
religion you practice; Christianity or Islam or maybe another but please stick
to one and come out of the closet!
The president of a particular country has been called the “most
hated president alive”. People have taken to social media to insult him
whenever they feel like it. You might wonder why. People voted for him because
he knew how to talk the talk (when he did talk after carefully choosing his
audience). His wife made him even more memorable with her peculiar and special
grammar. He had no policies laid down or even any plans. In his case, he
appealed to the poor and “rapidly diminishing middle-class” of how he went to
school with no shoes. Now, he appears to want all kids to go to school
shoeless, not because they choose to but because they have no other option.
This time, please, do not appeal to certain groups of
people. We see you speaking to the middle and lower class. We need to see you speak
to the high class too. Speak to people who can see through your policies and
who can point out the holes in them. Dish out your policies for all to see so
that they can decide if you are truly their man or not and last but not the
least, please cut down on the marketing tactics. It is getting tiring and
not-so-cute anymore.
Yours faithfully,
Meee.
